Alice in a World of Wonderlands: The English-Language Editions of the Four Alice Books Published Worldwide
Alice in a World of Wonderlands: The English-Language Editions of the Four Alice Books Published Worldwide is a two-volume set co-edited by Jon A. Lindseth and Arnold Hirshon that explores the legacy of the four Alice books: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Through the Looking-Glass, Alice’s Adventures under Ground, and The Nursery “Alice” published worldwide in English.
Volume One explores Alice’s world through eleven essays on their publishing and textual history (with five different censuses of extant copies), five essays about the history of their illustration by thousands of artists (including a detailed analysis of over 550 images), and seventeen essays written by major scholars and collectors from around the world who discuss how and why they became interested in the study of works by Lewis Carroll. Anyone interested in the history and illustration of these four books will find this volume irresistible and fascinating.
Volume Two contains checklist entries of 4,400 different editions of the four books documenting the chronological and geographic history of their publication in the United Kingdom, the United States, other English-language countries (Australia, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand), and 29 countries in the rest of the world. This volume also contains short discussions about publication and illustration trends since the first published edition of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in 1865, and a statistical analysis of both the publisher and illustration histories of these editions, both indexed. Collectors, libraries, bibliophiles, book dealers, and scholars will find this volume indispensable.
This two-volume set is a companion to the three-volume Alice in a World of Wonderlands: Translations of Lewis Carroll’s Masterpiece (Oak Knoll Press, 2015).
The Deluxe Edition is a limited and numbered with only 100 2-volume sets produced. Quantities are limited.
